Yushi Yokoyama
Born in 1967
Lives and works in Saïmata, near Tokyo, Japan
Yushi Yokoyama studied at Musashino Art University
Yushi Yokoyama is a comic book artist, mangaka, illustrator and artist. He creates highly personal drawings in black and white or bright pop colours. He tells strange stories about everyday life, saying that he ‘draws time'. He depicts landscapes and architecture inhabited solely by men wearing masks and strange costumes; women are never represented. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and internationally, notably at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Mamco in Geneva in 2018. He also works as a set and costume designer for the theatre.
Yushi Yokoyama said: "Drawing is really fun when you're doing it, but when it's finished, nothing happens. Manga isn't fun at all, but when it's finished, anything can happen. What you have to understand is that it's cheap, but it represents money. And the best thing is that you have readers."
