amien Deroubaix
Born in 1972 in Lille
Lives and works in Paris and Meisenthal in Alsace
Damien Deroubaix studied at the Fine Arts Schools of Saint Etienne and Karlsruhe
Damien Deroubaix uses various media (painting, sculpture, installation, engraving, watercolor, drawing) to develop a highly personal, expressionist, gothic style, saying, “For me, a painting is successful when all the elements that come together in it are as sharp and violent as possible, whether in terms of colors, composition, texts, or images.” He draws his inspiration from the media, history, and art history, and works on the principle of montage, juxtaposing elements, inscriptions, and “a profusion of signs.” He paints danse macabres, vanitas, works inspired by Picasso, primitive heads, fabulous bestiaries, and more. In 2009, he was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize. Also an exhibition curator, he has had numerous exhibitions dedicated to him, notably at the Maeght Foundation in 2014, the Museum of Hunting and Nature in 2021, and in 2024 at the BNF, which presented his engraved work.
Damien Deroubaix said: "(My painting) is the result of a process of unveiling; it seeks to take stock of the current situation. I seek to paint a portrait of the world in which we live. If it sometimes seems very dark, it is because I am trying to scratch away the veneer that covers our ultra-capitalist society, the society of images, consumption, advertising, etc."
