Philippe Druillet
Born in 1944 in Toulouse
Lives and works in Paris

Philippe Druillet is a comic book author and artist.  He began his career publishing in Pilote magazine, then in 1974 co-founded the publishing house Les Humanoïdes Associés and the magazine Métal Hurlant, which gave rise to a new graphic and cultural movement that redefined the codes of comic books. He creates worlds and epics that are uniquely his own and immediately recognisable. His baroque, complex, brightly coloured work is a world unto itself which, while primarily rooted in science fiction and fantasy, reflects his interest in cinema, literature, art history and music. He has collaborated extensively in various fields, creating album covers, posters and film sets, and designing sets for the cinema. He is considered one of the masters of contemporary comic books worldwide. He received the Grand Prix at the Angoulême Festival for his entire body of work in 1988 and the Grand Prix National des Arts Graphiques in 1996.

Philippe Druillet said: ‘In truth, the artist is a vampire, a Dracula who goes fishing, who needs others to live and who, how can I put it, feeds on the spiritual blood of others. That's how it is.'
