Loustal studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Loustal is a comic book artist, painter, and illustrator for publishing and the press. He published his first illustrations in the late 1970s in Rock & Folk magazine, then created comic strips in collaboration with Philippe Paringaux. Subsequently, his albums, in which he works on settings, atmospheres, colors, and the relationship to light, are accompanied by texts by writers such as Jérôme Charyn, Jean-Luc Coatalem, Denis Lehane, Tonino Benacquista, etc. He says that he seeks “above all a music of writing” and acts as a director of stories, who “adapts and reinvents with complete subjectivity,” which creates his particular style. His interest in painting, literature, and cinema, as well as travel, is reflected in his comic strips as well as in his travel journals and paintings.
Loustal said: “For me, color belongs to the artistic medium; it is the embodiment of what captivates me most: light.”
