Lorenzo Mattotti is a comic book author, painter, and illustrator. In 1980, he co-founded the Valvoline artists' collective, which aims to renew the aesthetics of comic books. He produces albums, travel journals, and biographical accounts. He has illustrated literary classics, including Collodi's Pinocchio and Dante's Divine Comedy, as well as children's literature. He has created posters for the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival, as well as covers for newspapers and magazines, including Le Monde, Libération, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. He has also illustrated songs by Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. A master colorist with a keen eye for creating atmosphere, settings, spaces, and rhythm, he is considered one of the masters of the ninth art. He won the Grand Prix de Bratislava in 1993, the Yellow Kid for best illustrator in 1997, and the Grand Boom at the Blois festival in 2005 for his entire body of work. His books have been translated all over the world. He regularly exhibits his paintings and illustrations and was honored with a retrospective at the FHEL in 2015-2016. In 2019, he directed a feature-length animated film, The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily.
oLrenzo Mattotti said: “I realized that in order to convey the idea of movement in a still image, it was necessary to remove everything superfluous and retain only the extreme tension of the line and form. Through composition and the interweaving of shapes and colors, it is possible to create a particularly strong tension in the drawing.”
