Pierre Commoy was born in La Roche-sur-Yon in 1950, Gilles Blanchard in Le Havre in 1953; they now live and work in Paris.
Pierre & Gilles began working together in 1976, and their work became inseparable from their lives. By 1981, they had perfected their system: preliminary drawings for theatrical stagings, set design, lighting, make-up sessions and posing. Pierre takes the shots, Gilles retouches them with paint. Their work is followed by a unique photographic print and special framing. They work in series, producing baroque images, “illusionist and mimetic representations”, essentially portraits. Their portrait gallery includes the anonymous, collectors, actors, musicians and singers. Internationally recognized, they work for the fashion industry, as well as for record sleeves and music videos. Their work falls somewhere between popular culture and icon, sex and religiosity, humor and references to Art History.
