Pierre La Police
Born in 1959
Lives and works in Paris
Pierre La Police is the pseudonym of a comic book artist, illustrator, artist, and animated film director who does not reveal his name. He published his first drawings in serial form in Les Inrockuptibles in the early 1990s, followed by comic books and photo novels. Since his debut, he has played with the grotesque, irony, and tragedy in his drawings to introduce a sense of incongruity, in the same way that he plays with words, saying he uses “everything from notarial jargon to Canadian wrestlers' punchlines.” He feeds his scenarios and then his drawings, made with gouache felt-tip pens, from his archives, built up over time from the media, popular culture, advertising, scientific vocabulary, corporate culture, and more. In 2001, he created an animated series for Canal+, Mini Pim Poum. He regularly exhibits in galleries and art centers.
Pierre La Police said: “Recognition and fame do not necessarily go hand in hand. I chose anonymity because I feel more comfortable behind the scenes than in the spotlight. As a person, I prefer to disappear behind my work to let it speak for itself. The art of showing is closely linked to the art of hiding.”
