Lives and works in Montpellier
In his paintings, Djamel Tatah depicts lifesize human figures in colorful, hieratic flat brushstrolkes, suspended in time and immersed in silence. His work highlights the way in which humanity can establish its presence in the world. Figures such as walkers, recliners, witnesses, observers, demonstrators and sufferers complement the solitary figures of his earlier work, creating a choreography of bodies in which repetition and variation becomes a form of expression. In 2013, his retrospective was held at the MAMA in Algiers, the Villa Medici in Rome and the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence. His most recent solo exhibitions took place at the Fondation Lambert in Avignon, the Musée Fabre in Montpellier and the Musée Matisse in Nice.
