Alain Séchas
Born in 1955 in Colombes
Lives and works in Paris
Alain Séchas studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués in Paris.
Alain Séchas is equally skilled in painting, drawing, sculpture and video. His work features recurring anthropomorphic figures, cats, Martians, octopuses and ghosts. He places them in everyday situations where he questions, in an absurd, burlesque or tragic way, the role of art in life, the question of existence, relationships with authority and life in society. Many of his works are held in public collections. He represented France at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1996, and in 2024 the Hainaut Provincial Art Museum in Belgium will devote a retrospective to him.
Alain Séchas said: ‘I don't believe in the artist's imagination at all. I simply believe that the artist creates something based on his or her powers of observation. As for self-portraits, they are almost the most obvious thing there is.'
