Levalet (Charles Leval, known as)
Born in 1988 in Épinal
Lives and works in Reims
Levalet studied visual arts in Strasbourg.
Since 2012, Levalet has been working in the streets of Paris, creating scenes on walls featuring characters drawn in Indian ink on kraft paper and then retouched with a brush. He stages his characters, the elements of a narrative, drawing on the culture of silent cinema and mythical tales, particularly for the Odyssey cycle. He plays with architecture, creating interactions between his figures and real space. Although he has a predilection for the absurd and the incongruous, his creations are also imbued with poetry. He exhibits regularly in France and internationally and participates in numerous urban art festivals and events. He has created murals on the walls of the Gare du Nord train station in Paris and in the 13th arrondissement.
Levalet said: “I imagine my installations directly for the location I have chosen, so that the juxtaposition of an element that belongs to reality, such as a street lamp, for example, and a represented element, such as a suspended character, creates a certain visual ambiguity that confuses two levels of reality.”
