Born in 1964 in Paris. Lives and works in Paris

Emmanuel Guibert is an artist and cartoonist, member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 2020.

In 1994, he met Alan Ingram Cope, who, like many young Americans at the time, had joined the army to fight WWII in Europe. Over time they became close friends and the graphic novels show Guibert genuine affection for the humble veteran.

Guibert's sophisticated style was the perfect medium to tell the story of this former GI. In Alan's War, Alan reminisces about his life as a soldier and the effects of war, and what happens to men when the fighting is over.

Guibert also collaborated closely with the photographer Didier Lefèvre. Together, they created a new type of graphic diary combining Guibert drawings with Lefèvre's photos. The Photographers tells the story of a group of Doctors without Borders who travelled with Lefèvre to Afghanistan in the late 1980s. It was an extremely hazardous and dangerous trip at the time.

Guibert is a member of l'Atelier des Vosges, a group of comic book writers (Riad Sattouf, Joann Sfar, Christophe Blain and David B…)formed in 1995 with the aim of modernising comic books. He worked closely with Joann Sfar to create funny and moving stories like La fille du Professeur (The Professor's Daughter) and Les Olives noires (Black Olives). Les Olives noires is about a father and son in Judea during the Roman occupation.

Emmanuel Guibert won the René Goscinny prize for his body of work as a comic book writer. He was awarded the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême at the International Comics Festival in 2020 and was appointed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts the same year.

Like Marjan Satrapi and David B, Emmanuel Guibert is an artist who has transformed the way we write graphic novels and use them to tell biographical stories.
