Chourouk Hriech
Born in 1977 in Bourg-en-Bresse
Lives and works in Marseille
Chourouk Hriech studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Lyon
Chourouk Hriech works in drawing, sculpture, performance, photography, and video. Her drawings, executed in Indian ink, Rothring pen, and black marker, are sometimes enhanced with color. She works on paper and canvas, but is also one of the notable artists of a generation that has taken up mural drawing as a medium without necessarily practicing street art. Real or imaginary, “fantasy-driven and recomposed,” they are inspired by sketches and photos from her travels around the world, as well as comics, manga, art history, and fairy tales. She rearranges her architectures, landscapes, characters, animals, and plants without regard to scale, creating proliferating, hybrid worlds in which birds are a recurring motif. A monograph on her work was published in 2025 by Éditions des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She has had numerous exhibitions in France and internationally and, in 2025, created sculptures for the city of Sète.
Chourouk Hriech said: “To draw is to appropriate and redefine a territory, first that of one's thoughts, then the space of the paper, and finally the real space/society.”
Chourouk Hriech, painter, sculptor and video artist, draws fragments of cities, existing or imaginary, populated by birdsand plants that take shape as she wanders. She poetically transforms the political space of these places, creating an imaginary cartography that invites an inner journey. Chourouk Hriech, who defines herself as a storyteller of contemporary fables, created a monumental installation for the Lyon Biennial in 2024. `
