David B. (Pierre-François Beauchard, known as)

David B. studied at the École des Appliqués Duperré in Paris
David B. is a cartoonist, comic book writer, and publisher. He began publishing in magazines in 1985. In the 1990s, he was one of the founders, along with Joan Sfar and Marjane Satrapi, of the Atelier des Vosges collective and the publishing house L'Association, which sought to renew the comic book genre. He has created a series of autobiographical graphic novels. David B. mainly uses black and white in his drawings. His publications reflect his interest in history, art history, cinema, literature, and issues affecting marginalized groups in society. He received the Töppfer Prize from the city of Geneva in 2000 and 2003 and the Alph'art for best screenplay at the Angoulême Festival in 2000. In 2008, he received the Grand Boom-Ville de Blois Prize for his entire body of work. In 2016, the Le Pavillon Blanc art center in Colomiers and the Musée de l'Abbaye Sainte-Croix in Les Sables d'Olonne dedicated a solo exhibition to him.
David B. said: "It is by putting pen to paper that thoughts take shape. They need to be supported by practice. When we draw, we enter a slightly altered state, which allows emotions to be released and come to the surface ".
