Hervé Di Rosa
Born in 1969 in Sète
Lives and works in Paris and Lisbon
Hervé Di Rosa studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris
Hervé Di Rosa co-founded the Figuration libre group in 1981. He painted heroes and superheroes of his own invention, giving them names, roles, and attributes, and created “Dyromythology.” He drew inspiration from the worlds of childhood, comic books, the media, science fiction, and more. He painted life and instincts: sex, drugs, violence, power, everyday life, death... After 1985, this universe, saturated with figures and colors, sometimes became more serene, representing the sea, landscapes, or everyday life. He embarked on a world tour in 1993 and shared the traditions and techniques of artisans in his work. In 2000, he brought his characters back to life in Les René, 26 cartoons produced for Canal+, and later in painting, with the Di Rosa Classic series. He has exhibited all over the world, most recently at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2024, and in Libres figurations années 80 with the FHEL in 2018 and 2021. His work is featured in major public and private collections. Deeply committed to defending artists' rights, he founded the International Museum of Modest Art (MIAM) in Sète in 2000 and has been President of Adagp since 2021. He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2022.
Hervé Di Rosa said: "My creative approach is characterized by my taste for nomadism, my irrepressible need to reach out to others in order to achieve new forms of expression, to push boundaries, to change the status of works of art and the way we view them. I am very attached to this way of working and progressing, outside the margins. In fact, I am convinced that artists cannot and should not be elitist."
