Enki Bilal arrived in Paris in 1961 and briefly attended the École des Beaux-Arts in the early 1970s, while also beginning to publish his first comic books.
Enki Bilal is a painter, draftsman, illustrator, author, and director. He became known for his comic books, in which he creates a fantastical universe and explores the major themes of the human condition, offering his realistic and disturbing vision of the world. He deals in particular with history, time (past, present, and future), memory, climate change, and the digital world. He won the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 1987. Enki Bilal, whose legendary albums have been translated around the world, has been the subject of major exhibitions in France and internationally. His work was the focus of a major retrospective at the FHEL in 2021.
Enki Bilal said: “Current events and history influence artists and shake them up... We must mix events together and seek their meaning in the depths of time.”
