Olivier Masmonteil
Born in 1973 in Romilly-sur-Seine
Lives and works in Paris
Olivier Masmonteil studied at the Beaux-Arts in Brive-la-Gaillarde and then at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
Olivier Masmonteil is a painter and co-founder of the web series “Journal de la culture.” Committed from the outset to defending the practice of painting, he draws inspiration from art history, which he makes one of his subjects, reinterpreting works by old masters, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes in the series La Mémoire de la peinture (The Memory of Painting). He works by superimposing layers, freely adding elements to his copies of paintings using a variety of techniques. In other series, he paints landscapes, nature, and memories of his travels around the world, based on his photographs, which act as notes and recollections. His research into the history of painting has made him a master of techniques and color, using different mediums and ways of painting to vary colors, penetrate light on the canvas, “between opacity and transparency,” and give the illusion of depth of field. He exhibits in France and internationally. He participated in Immortelle at MO.CO in Montpellier in 2023 and in Jour des Peintres at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris in 2024.
Olivier Masmonteil said: “The sky is the greatest thing that human beings can comprehend, and to capture it in a painting, even a small one, is the painter's fantasy of putting the infinitely large into a limited space.”
